A Message from the Publisher
Dear Reader,
Another new year is upon us. It's a time for new beginnings and the hope for continued strength for our families, friends and communities.
This year marks my 40th in the community... how fortunate for me that I call DeKalb County home! I came to DeKalb from the northwest suburbs as a freshman at NIU in the fall of 1972. I had no plans to stay in DeKalb after graduation, but life is funny that way…it's what happens when we are busy making other plans, so the saying goes.
Along the way, I have been constantly and continually amazed at the ingenuity, inventiveness, diversity and intelligence of our residents. I have been privileged to tell so many of their stories over the years, and am excited at for the opportunity to share even more of them with you this year.
Early in December, I was fortunate to be among this season's small group of people invited into Dave Miner's home to tour his Christmas wonderland. I'll share the full story and LOTS of photos with you in a future issue of InVironments, but suffice it to say that even I will have a hard time finding words to describe the experience!
Truly a creative genius, Miner has developed his own version of House on the Rock (Spring Green, WI) with an important caveat—he created, designed, assembled and built with his own hands nearly all of the music boxes, animated figures and delightful features that fill every nook and cranny of his home. It's truly a “you have to see it to believe it” experience that I look forward to sharing with our readers.

Inspirational people abound in DeKalb County. It's one of best things about living here. I'm proud to say this issue of InVironments features some of the most inspirational people among us.
From cancer survivors finding ways to help others, to the caring people at DeKalb County Drug Court giving people the tools to turn their lives around, their stories are positive and meaningful. Just as inspirational are the music and dance programs at our local high schools, the water exercise classes offered at the local YMCA, and the innovative Engineering Program at Kishwaukee College.
Our "InTheNews" feature continues to be well-received and I encourage you to continue sending your photos and short news items to me. It's just another way InVironments plans to focus on the good and positive things local people are accomplishing.
